Most of us wash bedsheets less often than we think we do, and towels far less often than we should. Here's a practical schedule, why it matters, and how Bengaluru's weather changes it.
The quick answer
| Item | How often |
|---|---|
| Pillow covers | Every 3–4 days, and at least weekly |
| Bedsheets | Weekly, and no longer than every two weeks |
| Bath towels | After 3–4 uses (every 2–3 in humid months) |
| Hand towels | Every 1–2 days |
| Kitchen towels | Daily |
| Duvet or quilt covers | Every 1–2 weeks |
| Mattress protector | Monthly |
| Pillows (the pillow itself) | Every 3–6 months |
| Quilts, blankets and duvets | 2–3 times a year, and before storing |
| Curtains | Every 3–6 months, sooner on a busy road |
These are general guidelines. Adjust them for the situations below.
Why it matters
Every night, bedding collects sweat, skin cells and body oils. That's food for dust mites and a home for bacteria. Pillow covers get the most of it, because your face, hair and any skin products sit on them for hours. Towels stay damp after each use, and damp fabric is where the musty smell starts.
Wash more often if…
- It's humid or monsoon season. In Bengaluru's wet months, from June to October, towels dry slowly and sour quickly. Wash them more often and make sure they dry fully between uses.
- You have allergies or asthma. A hot wash (around 60°C, if the fabric allows) is the usual advice for reducing dust mites in bedding.
- Someone in the house is unwell. Wash their bedding and towels separately and more often.
- Pets sleep on the bed. Weekly becomes the minimum.
- You sweat at night or have acne-prone skin. Change pillow covers every two or three days.
- You live near a main road or construction. Dust settles on curtains and bedding faster.
How to wash each one
Bedsheets and pillow covers
Wash cotton sheets warm (40–60°C, as the label allows) with a normal detergent. Wash them apart from towels, which shed lint onto the sheets. Don't overload the machine: sheets need room to move to get clean. Dry them completely before folding.
Towels
Wash towels warm and skip fabric softener. It coats the fibres and makes towels less absorbent. If a towel smells musty even after washing, it wasn't dried fully. Rewash it and dry it in the sun or in a well-ventilated spot.
Quilts, blankets and duvets
These are the hard ones at home. They're often too big for a home machine to wash properly, and the thick filling stays damp inside long after the surface feels dry, which leads to smell and mildew. Wash them before you store them away, and make sure they're bone dry.
Curtains
Take them down every few months and follow the label. Many curtains, especially lined, heavy or silk ones, are dry-clean only and shrink or lose their shape in water.
A simple rotation
To keep up with a weekly schedule without stress, keep:
- Two or three sets of sheets per bed. One on, one in the wash, one spare.
- Three bath towels per person. Enough to rotate while one dries.
- Extra pillow covers. They're cheap, and the item worth changing most often.
Drying in the monsoon
- Dry indoors with a fan running, or in a room with airflow
- Space items out on the rack so air can move between them
- Never fold or store anything even slightly damp
- If you're short on space, send the bulky items out and keep your drying space for daily wear

Frequently asked questions
Is it okay to wash bedsheets every two weeks?
Every two weeks is the outer limit for most people. Weekly is better, and pillow covers should be changed more often than the sheets.
Should you wash a towel after every use?
No. A bath towel that dries fully between uses can go three or four uses. In humid weather, or if it stays damp, wash it sooner.
Can I wash a quilt in a home washing machine?
Some thin quilts fit in a large front-loader. Thicker quilts and duvets usually don't have enough room to be washed properly, and they're very hard to dry fully at home. That's where professional cleaning helps.
How often should I wash the pillow itself?
Every three to six months, following its label. Using a pillow protector under the cover keeps it cleaner for longer.
