Ironing is the chore most Bengaluru households hand over first. For years that meant the neighbourhood istriwala with a heavy charcoal iron. Now steam pressing is common too. Both get wrinkles out, but they work differently, and for some fabrics the difference matters.
How each one works
A dry iron (electric or charcoal) uses direct heat and pressure. People often sprinkle water on the fabric first to help it along. A charcoal iron is heavy and very hot, which is why it's fast on thick cotton.
A steam press forces steam through the fabric, which relaxes the fibres from the inside. The garment is then pressed and set on a padded table. It uses less direct heat on the surface of the cloth, and the moisture does most of the work.

For a plain cotton shirt, both do a good job. The gap shows up on dark trousers (shiny patches from direct heat), silk and synthetic blends (scorching or glazing), and linen (which creases stubbornly and needs moisture to relax).
Which fabric suits which
- Cotton shirts and kurtas: either works. Steam gives a slightly softer finish.
- Linen: steam. Dry heat alone struggles with linen's deep creases.
- Silk and satin: steam at low heat, from the reverse.
- Polyester and blends: steam, or a dry iron on the lowest setting. High heat can glaze or melt them.
- Wool trousers and blazers: steam through a press cloth, never direct heat.
- Dark jeans and trousers: steam, or a dry iron with the garment inside out.
- Embroidered or sequinned pieces: steam from the back, never pressed face-down with direct heat.

When pressing isn't enough
Pressing a garment that has a stain or sweat marks can set the stain with heat. If a shirt has been worn, wash it before pressing. Wash & iron does both in one step, at ₹39 for a shirt.
Ironing better at home
If you iron some things yourself:
- Iron cotton while it's still very slightly damp. It's faster, with a better finish.
- Turn dark fabrics inside out to avoid shine.
- Check the care label. One dot on the iron symbol means low heat (up to about 110°C), two dots medium (about 150°C) and three dots high (about 200°C). An iron with a cross through it means don't iron it.
- Iron delicate fabrics first while the iron heats up, and cottons and linen last.
Frequently asked questions
Is steam pressing better than ironing for shirts?
For plain cotton shirts both give a good result. Steam pressing is gentler on blends, avoids shine on dark colours, and gives a slightly softer drape. It really pulls ahead on linen, silk and synthetics.
Does a steam press remove creases from linen?
Yes. Linen needs moisture to relax its fibres, which is exactly what steam provides. Dry ironing alone often leaves linen still creased.
Does steam pressing disinfect clothes?
Hot steam does help freshen fabric, but it isn't a substitute for washing. If a garment has been worn, washing it first is the hygienic choice.
